Death and the Maiden (Der Tod und das Mädchen in German) was a common motif in Renaissance art, especially in German painting and printmaking. The usual form shows just two figures, with a young woman being seized by a personification of Death, often shown as a skeleton. This April 20th I welcome you to explore these romantic motifs with me in my studio.

Yet since the 1860’s the medium has been enlisted to provide proof of the supernatural, transfigurations and spirits of the dead, auras, apparitions, seances and levitations.
